Do we have to chose between health and economy?

Talk with Pedro Caetano e Ricardo Mexia

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a dramatic loss of human life worldwide and presents an unprecedented challenge to public health and the world of work.

The pandemic is raising pressure over debilitated health systems leading governments to take action in order to flat the contagion curve and contain the impact over ICU. To address the growth of infected, governments are relying on restrictive measures reducing the mobility in large portions of their territory and putting their population under strict quarantine.

These restrictive and drastic measures direct impact on the economy, leaving millions of enterprises face an existential threat. Nearly half of the world’s 3.3 billion global workforce are at risk of losing their livelihoods, urging governments to constantly balance their measures between public health and the economy.

In this talk, we discuss with Dr. Ricardo Mexia (public health M.D. and epidemiologist) and Dr. Pedro Caetano (Director of Global Regulatory Affairs at IPSEN), how Portugal reacted to the first wave of infection and what would be the best approach to balance the need to flat the contagion curve and the needed measures to sustain economic survival.

Takeaway

The success of a strategy can only be measured at the end of the pandemic

Different countries are experiencing slightly different approaches in containing the virus, is very hard to evaluate side by side these measures and their impact on the contagion curve. We will need several months to understand and measure the real success of each measure and its side effects on the economy.

Different countries had a different reaction towards COVID-19

Almost all countries adopted quarantine as contingency measures to sustain the impact of COVID-19. Nevertheless, most countries were reactive in the way they implemented these measures often sifting between contradictory measures.

We will have to live with the virus

There are 3 ideal outcomes to overcome the virus. The ability to develop and distribute a vaccine, an effective therapeutic option, or herd immunity. None of these outcomes are close to being a reality, thus we need to get used to living with COVID-19.

There's no economy without a healthy population

Economy and public health must walk side by since a country cannot have a healthy economy without a healthy population with productive capacity.
